Prof. Eran Tauber - "Biological Clocks: The Genetics of Sleep-Wake Cycles"
Place: Kanibar Jungle, Derech Ha'atzmaut 41, Haifa
Department: Evolutionary and Environmental Biology
The biological clock is an extraordinary system that generates daily rhythms of numerous processes in our body, including sleep and wake cycles, hormone levels, and gene expression. The 2017 Nobel Prize in Physiology and Medicine was awarded to American geneticists for the discovery of clock genes in the fruit-fly, which is similar to human genes. In the lecture, we will cover the genetic basis of the clock, the health implications of trans-Atlantic flights and jetlag, shift work and exposure to artificial light. We will also talk about the genetics of individual diurnal preferences, and the difference between “morning” and “evening” people.
