Dr. Israel Waismel-Manor – "Pretty Bad: Physical Attractiveness and Its Effect on Work and Politics"
Place: WeWork, Derech Ha'atzmaut 45, Haifa
Department: School of Political Science
In an ideal world, we would like employees to be recruited or promoted according to their skills, just as we would like the public to elect the best politicians for the job. In reality, unfortunately, this is not the case. Physically attractive individuals find work more easily, get promoted faster, and earn more than their less attractive colleagues. Even in the political arena, attractive candidates get more coverage and obtain greater electoral success than their rivals. What makes people discriminate against the less beautiful? What is the extent of this discrimination and how does it harm less attractive people? How can we as employees, employers and voters reduce this discrimination?
