Ideas Come True: Haifa Multiversity

Community and Academia Meet in Downtown Haifa

The University of Haifa is pleased to invite you to the European Researchers’ Night.  This year, the event will take the format of “Science at the Bar”.  Come hear fascinating presentations on contemporary topics by our award-wining faculty members.

The talks are being hosted at locations around the Lorry I. Lokey City Campus, innovation and high-tech centers and pubs.

The talks will be held simultaneously and are open to the general public.

Doors Open at 19:00 | Lectures Begin at 19:30

Free Admission. Seating will be on a first come first served basis.

Prof. Oren Weimann – "Computer Science? Not What You Had in Mind…"

Place: MATI, Derech Ha'atzmaut 65, Haifa

Department: Computer Science

networksHow many different driving routes do you think there are between two points in Haifa? (You are not allowed to exist Haifa or to return to the same place twice). So how many? Millions? Trillions? Much more. In fact, more than the number of atoms in the universe! But somehow (and this is practically a miracle) among all these numerous paths, finding the shortest path can be done very quickly (as Waze does). But is there also a method to quickly find the longest path? Many smart people have been thinking about this but no one could find a method. Why are many smart people wasting their time on such a ridicules problem? Because whoever discovers a method to quickly find the longest path would entirely change our perception of the world (and would become a very rich and famous person). Whoever discovers such a method would immediately solve central problems in various fields of science (such as biology, chemistry, engineering, and economics). In my lecture I will explain such phenomena, and why in general computer scientist do not try to understand computers but try to understand problems and their connections.
