Dr. Roee Diamant - "Discovering the Deep: Target Detection in Sonar Imagery"

Place: The Lorry I. Lokey City Campus, Hanamal St. 65, Haifa, 6th Floor, Auditorium 63

Department: The Hatter Department of Marine Technologies

The shores of the Mediterranean Sea as long been a financial and military center of marine activity. Recent archeological surveys as proven that the research of wrecks and sunken settlements can shed light on the far and near history. Without oxygen the findings are well preserved and can tell us about the daily life of sailors and merchants. With the establishment  of the Department of Marine Technologies, the University of Haifa now holds the required facilities to perform a detailed survey of the depth of the  sea. With the help of autonomous underwater vehicles and advanced detection and navigation algorithms, the researchers developed methodologies for automatic scanning of large underwater areas. In this talk, Dr. Roee Diamant, the head of the underwater acoustic and navigation laboratory, will present the developed method and will discuss his attempt for finding sunken boats the shores of Cesaria and of his search for the Altalena boat
