There are vast differences in income levels, both between and within countries. Surprisingly, income inequality between countries has been much lower before the Industrial Revolution, and the process of development since then was accompanied by a substantial increase in income inequality. In this lecture we attempt to highlight what causes for the vast income differences between and within countries, and in particular we will focus on important historical and cultural processes that have contributed to the rise in income inequality. We will try to understand if these processes have necessarily led to the rise in inequality. We will also try to infer from historical events if the forecasted automation in production will lead to a rise in income inequality.
