What affects our mood and happiness? Constant variables such as social status, income level and family condition can affect our overall state of happiness, but cannot explain transient fluctuations in mood. In this talk I will discuss the link between mood and surprises - an unexpected email from an old friend, winning or losing a sum of money - and the brain mechanisms encoding such surprises. Do lab based results reflect in real world decisions? Analysis of Lottery gambling patterns in the US reveals a similar effect of surprises - people were more likely to increase their gambling rates during unseasonable warm spell during winter, but not during expected nice weather. Understanding the effect of surprises can help us make better decisions, increase the effect of good surprises on mood and decrease the effect of bad surprises.
